Essential Oils that are as strong as Conventional Medicine

Updated: Jan 23, 2019

When I was a little girl, my father was in his medical residency. I had such respect for Doctors, I was never taught to question them. I just knew that this pill was for this ill and so on. Never did I learn that there were natural, less internally destructive ways to approach medicine.

After staying sick for so many years and realizing with experience that Doctors do not know everything....they are just people like us, I began this journey to a more holistic & natural life. I have been great cutting out any and all malnutritive food, but this year I have also focused on cutting out the toxins and using more holistic remedies for my body as well.

So insert essential oil remedies. I will admit that I was a skeptic for sure.

The claim that a blend of oils would alleviate my debilitating period cramps like my 800 motrin's? I think not!

It didn't hurt to try, and boy was I proved wrong. Not only did the blend work but it worked FASTER than popping a Motrin. (don't worry, recipe for this blend coming later in the post!) From then on, I was HOOKED! I have been researching blends & EO remedies since then. I will eventually take classes as its something I really fell in love with but being that my plate is full becoming a practitioner...I'll pause that for a few.

Let's chat about EO's for a minute because not all are created equally.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are pure plant extracts with an aroma that is at least 70 times more concentrated than the herb or plant from which it is extracted. Not all plants contain essential oils, and only a small number of these are of therapeutic quality. They are not fragrances of perfumed oils that are constructed in a laboratory and are naturally free from harmful chemicals.

The chemical constituents that make up an essential oil are bioactive creating fast, dynamic results. For instance, lavender‘s constituents can induce a good sense of calm. Rosemary can create more of a ‘pep up’ reaction. All essential oils are antiseptic and antibacterial to some degree and can aid the body’s curative and restorative mechanisms when under stress or when illness invades. There is also a growing body of peer-reviewed studies supporting the benefits of essentials oils.

How to find Quality Oils

Essential oils can be graded in 6 levels, or star-ratings. The lowest grading is 1-star, or commercial oils (eh hem, rhymes with boeberra lol) , that are typically made from 100% synthetic ingredients. The highest grading is 6-star, or certified organic, pure essential oils. All Certified Organic produce (inc. essential oils) are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, or GMOs with a focus on environmentally sustainable practices through soil and land health, and balanced eco-systems.

The high degree of purity means that you can use less of it while still achieving the desired results.

How to use EO's

Essential oils can be used in a number of ways including in a diffuser or inhaler, in a spritzer bottle, in the bath, in a massage blend and by simply inhaling them. When we inhale an aroma those constituents travel up the olfactory system via the nasal cavity and into the limbic part of the brain (that governs emotions). Essential oils can also be used to supplement existing beauty rituals. One drop of frankincense essential oil, for instance, added to a skin cream can help regenerate skin cells more quickly.

Here are a few of my favorite oils, blends & uses.

My favorite US brand to use is Plant Therapy.

They offer high quality oils at affordable prices. They have so many fantastic products that I have tried over the last year, from their salt inhaler (for my asthma or when I feel restricted) to their portable diffuser that I use with lavender in my car to calm me down & alleviate road rage lol! They also have fantastic blends with a ton of kid-safe options.

Uses & Recipes

PMS & Menstrual Cramps? UGH! I don't know about you, but mine are debilitating. Sometimes I can't stand all the way up straight!

Watch this how to video so that you can create your own "Bye Cramps" blend.

I used:

Mix & rub onto abdomen & low back if needed. Wait a short bit and start wondering where your cramps went! I know, cool AF huh?! *on the 1st day when the pain is super intense, I will not use any dilution & just 1 drop of each oil.*

I also premix this blend with a carrier oil & add to a roller bottle and carry it everywhere during Shark week just in case! It saves other people's lives here in Vegas lol!

Some of the best pain relieving oils are:

  • Peppermint: take a drop neat (no dilution) on your middle fingers & rub on the temples *avoid getting close to eyes or sore muscle

  • lavender works well for headaches too & is calming and relaxing for your body as well as your muscles. This is a great oil to use in conjunction with the oils mentioned above (especially in a hot bath) to ensure a good nights sleep and recovery. )

  • Birch- is analgesic, anti spasmodic, anti rheumatic, and anti arthritic.

  • Frankincense-is actually the most powerful anti inflammatory oil, making it great for pains and migraines, especially when associated with inflammation and arthritis.

  • There are also several pre-made blends I like for this like TensionAid, MuscleAid, or Rapid Relief which I personally travel with now instead of NSAIDs ((Which greatly contribute to leaky gut!))

Just a drop of oil (diluted or neat if that's something your body can handle) on the effected area, and not close to eyes, helps to bring relief.

To Relieve a Stuffed Up Nose: Use several drops of eucalyptus essential oil in a diffuser, with steam inhalation, a hot bath, or even in a vaporizer. OR-

To Prevent Airborn Infection From Spreading: Diffuse or vaporize -

To Calm Chesty Coughs: Try this essential oil chest rub ─

  • 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil, 2 drops myrrh essential oil, 4 drops cedarwood essential oil, 4 tsp carrier oil. Massage the blend into the chest, morning and evening

For an Aching Body: Use this combination in a hot bath, with a hot or cold compress, or with a carrier oil as a body massage blend ─

Ear Infections:

  • Immune Aid -Diffuse, apply on bottom of feet 4-5X daily

  • Create an Essential Oil Blend of 10 drops Basil Essential Oil, 10 drops Tea Tree and 10 drops Lavender Oil – Dilute and rub on the area outside of the ear, do not put oil in the ear.

  • Combine 5 drops Peppermint Oil, 10 drops Lemon Oil, 15 drops Rosemary Oil with 20 drops carrier oil, rub mix into lower abdomen clockwise for 5-10 min. Repeat as necessary.

Lavender Tea Tree Acne Gel

Stress Relief/Sleep:

  • Lavender Essential Oil – Diffuse, apply to soles of feet and back of neck to induce calm

  • Relax Essential Oil Blend– Diffuse throughout the day to relieve stress. Apply to soles of feet at bedtime to promote sleep and rest.

  • Eucalyptus Essential Oil – Diffuse, apply to soles of feet or dilute and apply to chest to relieve congestion for better sleep

  • Sleep Aid Blend- Diffuse, roll-on or add to aromatherapy inhaler.

I like to keep already pre-diluted in these roller bottles for easy application throughout the day as well. And these pre-made roll on blends are a convenient lifesaver! Plant Therapy also has some great starter & combo sets for the best bang for your buck.

So there you have it! More than enough to get you started. I have been switching as much conventional medication to holistic remedies as possible and essential oils are a MUST when doing so. I am loving the endless health supportive possibilities I have found with essential oils.

*Natural remedies can sometimes work a little slower than synthetic, but using them at the start of any symptom helps the relief to take effect more quickly and the long term effects are much cleaner and healthier for your body.

I hope you've learned a little today! Feel free to share you favorite EO recipes or success stories in the comments!
